Skateboard Trucks – Sizes Matter

Description

The metal axle part that connects to the bottom of the deck of the skateboard is referred to as the “truck.”

Three things you should be aware of when thinking about the skateboard truck are:

Truck Width

Your truck width should be matched to the width of your deck. Using the following guide, match your truck to your deck:

4.75 for up to 7.5″ wide decks
5.0 for up to 7.75″ wide decks
5.25 for up to 8.125″ wide decks
For 8.25″ and up, you can use 5.25 trucks, or use super wide trucks.

Trucks should be matched to within 1/4″ of the size of the deck.

Bushings

A small part, made of rubber and looking like a donut Inside the trucks, are the bushings. The bushings are there to cushion the truck when it turns. The softer the bushings, the easier the turn. The stiffer the bushings, the more stable the skateboard. An individual who is new to skateboarding should use stiff bushings. Though the rider gains stability in the learning experience, they will break in over time. For more seasoned skateboarders, medium bushings are the better choice. It is recommended that soft bushings be incorporated into boards by skateboarders who want to spend most of their time carving. Know that soft bushings can make tricks difficult, and require a lot of control.

Truck Height

Truck heights vary. Like small wheels, low trucks make flip tricks easier and make for a stable board. Of course. with lower trucks you will need those smaller wheels. High trucks allow you to use larger wheels, which will help when skateboarding at higher speeds or long distances.

A new skateboarder is better off using medium trucks, unless he/she is confident that the main use for the skateboard will be only for street use or only for cruising. For street, low trucks should be used. If cruising medium or high trucks are a good choice for those larger wheels. Check our listings to match your skateboard truck needs.
